Welcome to DANKO
An Australian owned handbag company, where vibrant Colombian craftsmanship meets timeless British-Australian elegance. We are Daniel, a Colombian native with a passion for preserving cultural heritage, and Bianca, a British-Australian with a love for quality craftsmanship. Together, we embarked on a journey to bring you a curated collection of handmade crochet bags also known as Wayuu bags and, in the future, we plan to extend our bag range into leather and faux leather bags.
Our Story:
Born from the fusion of two rich cultures, our story began after our first child was born and we visited Daniel’s family in his hometown of Cali, Colombia. During this visit we travelled to various destinations, and this is when Daniel introduced Bianca to the stunning Wayuu Bags, which are also known as Mochila’s.
These Wayuu bags are made by an amazing indigenous tribe called the Wayuu people, that use a unique crochet technique that has been passed down from generation to generation. We both share an appreciation for the artistry and the indigenous heritage embedded in Colombian Wayuu bags. As a couple, we had envisioned creating a platform that not only showcases the beauty of these handmade crochet bags but also celebrates the diverse stories behind each stitch.
Why Wayuu Bags?
Our love for Wayuu mochila’s stems from the intricate techniques passed down through generations. The tradition comes from "Wale´kerü", a spider that taught the women how to weave their creative designs into the Wayuu bags. Most of the Wayuu bag maker are female and each mother passes down their skills and knowledge to their children.
The Wayuu have faced significant challenges throughout their history. Colonisation, land disputes, and political marginalisation have led to their mistreatment and displacement. Even today, many Wayuu communities struggle with poverty, limited access to clean water, and basic healthcare services. Despite their cultural significance, the Wayuu people have often been overlooked by their respective governments, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and environmental threats.
In recent years, the global popularity of Wayuu bags has provided a lifeline for many in the community. Through the sale of these bags, Wayuu artisans, particularly women, have been able to support their families and preserve their traditions. For many, this craftsmanship is their primary source of income. The increasing recognition of Wayuu bags in fashion markets worldwide has not only brought financial support to the community but also raised awareness of the Wayuu’s plight
By bringing these beautiful handbags to a global audience, we aim to support the preservation of this ancient craft and empower the talented females behind it, while also supporting indigenous communities
Our Commitment
At Danko, we are dedicated to authenticity, ethical sourcing, and sustainable practices. Every Wayuu bag on our platform tells a unique story of cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and resilience. We are honoured to be part of the journey that connects these talented artisans with the wider world.
We believe in respecting the artistry behind each bag and ensuring the Wayuu artisans receive fair value for their labour. That’s why we always pay the full asking price, never negotiating or undervaluing their exceptional work. Our commitment supports these communities, we help preserve their traditional techniques and empower female artisans to thrive.
Giving Back
At Danko, we believe in the power of giving back. Each year, a portion of our profits is donated to support the indigenous Wayuu communities. We’re proud to directly contribute directly to the Wayuu community, ensuring they receive 100% of the contribution without going through intermediaries. This way, the full donation reaches those who need it most, making a real and immediate impact on their lives
Last year we spread a little joy by providing Christmas gifts for Wayuu children, bringing smiles to their faces and making a difference where it matters most. This donation came directly from our own pockets however, your support helps us continue these efforts and create a lasting, positive impact.
Looking to the Future
While our roots are firmly planted in the vibrant colours of Wayuu mochila’s, and supporting the indigenous communities, we also have big dreams for the future. Inspired by our multicultural heritage, we aspire to expand our collection to include a range of beautifully crafted leather bags, tote bags, unique handbags and more. Stay tuned as we evolve and grow, always dedicated to bringing you the best of Colombian and British-Australian craftsmanship.
